For example, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, hotels, shopping and other retail services are much more plentiful in suburban and exurban Maryland than similarly populated areas of Connecticut, which makes life Maryland more convenient than life in Connecticut.
However, the New England town form of government is quite autonomous and, subsequently, towns have the ability to greatly control and restrict commercial and, in many cases, residential development and land use within its jurisdiction.ĭue to land-use and zoning restrictions, most Connecticut towns have been able to maintain their rural or semi-rural charm and historic character, which presents more negatives than positives, in my opinion. As an aside, some of the counties in the larger, more rural New England states still retain some basic and rudimentary functions. In Connecticut and neighboring Rhode Island, town government is exceptionally strong, even by New England standards, due to the official abolishment of county governance within both states many, many years ago. Since Connecticut is located in the New England region, the basic local unit of government and local division of state authority within the state is the "New England town." Generally, the New England town form of government provides a high degree of home rule for cities and towns that does not exist outside of New England, especially in Southern and Western states where county government is very strong.
